30 JUN-2 JUL VAISHNAVA YOGINI EKADASHI

The Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi vrat is observed on the ‘Krishna Paksha Ekadashi’ (11th day of the dark fortnight of moon) during the ‘Vaamana’ month in the Vaishnava calendar. For Samarth’s this fasting day falls in the month of ‘Ashaad’ and in the Gregorian calendar, the date comes between June to July. Yogini Ekadashi is known to be a propitious ekadashi that has powers to free the individual from all the sins. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with full devotion and faith on this day. In some regions, worshipping the Peepal Tree is considered very auspicious, on Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi.

Rituals during Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi:

  • Just like other ekadashi fasting, the vrat on Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi spans for a period of three days. The preparations starts a day before, on ‘dashami’ (10th day) wherein eating only one meal is allowed during noon. The person on this day should not eat in other’s home or even have food served in bell-metal plates. Sleeping on the ground is advised on this day.
  • On the actual ekadashi day the person fasts from day to night. Some of the devotees even do not drink water in the honour of their lord. While strict fasting is believed to be rewarding, individuals can even keep partial fasting due to health or medical reasons. In partial fasting eating of fruits, nuts and dairy products is allowed.
  • On the ekadashi day, the observer gets up before sunrise. Taking bath with a paste made from ‘Til’ (sesame seeds) is considered very auspicious. After finishing the morning routine work, idol of Lord Vishnu is worshipped with flowers, incense sticks and lamp. Jagran is performed at ekadashi night and devotees sing bhajans and chant Vedic mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu, all night. They also visit temple of Lord Vishnu in the evening to attend the rituals held there. Reading ‘Bhagavad Gita’, ‘Vishnu Sahasranaam’ and other religious books is considered rewarding on this day.
  • The Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi vrat is broken on the next day, ‘dwadashi’ (12th day) after offering prayers to the lord and making some form of donations to a respectful Brahmins. One, who observes strict fast on ekadashi, must break the fast by drinking ‘Charnamrita’ (water left after washing Lord’s feet) only. The ‘Parana’ (fast breaking ritual) of the Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi should be done on the correct time as mentioned in the calendar.

Significance of Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi:

The glories of Vaishnava Yogini Ekadashi are mentioned in the ‘Brahma Vaivarta Purana’ in which Lord Krishna himself explained the rituals and merits of observing this fast to Maharaja Yudhisthira, the eldest Pandav brother.
