Legend has it that Lord Vishnu who is sleeping during the Chatur Mas period turned sideways from his supine position on Jal Zilani Ekadashi day.

Another legend associated with the day is that Lord Krishna took the Gopis in Vrindavan for boating and in return demanded yoghurt. So people donate and share yoghurt on the day.

Some devotees observe a strict fasting on the day. They do not take water. But most devotees observe the usual rules associated with Ekadasi fasting on the day.

As part of puja on the day, an idol of Lord Krishna is taken to a lake or river and worshipped. The idol is also taken on a boat ride on the river. Some people also carry the Ganesha idol installed as part of Ganesh Chaturthi festival and immerse it on the day in a lake or river.

    Legend Of Ekadashi

As per the legend, once Lord Vishnu was in Yoga Nidra. At that time, a demon named Murdanav, came and challenged Lord Vishnu for a fight. As Lord Vishnu was in Yoga Nidra, a damsel appeared from his Ekadash Indri (eleventh sense). As soon as Murdanav had a glimpse of the damsel, he got so attracted that he wanted to marry her. But, the damsel put a condition that first he would have to fight with her. Murdanav became so passionate after seeing the damsel that he agreed to have a fight. In the fight, the demon got killed by the damsel. Lord Vishnu became happy and got pleased by the firm dedication of the damsel. He granted her a boon that she will be named as Ekadashi, as she appeared from his Ekadash Indri. Goddess Ekadashi told Lord Vishnu that she wants people to keep fast on the day of Ekadashi. Also, by observing this fast, people will get free from all evils and sins. Lord Vishnu granted her the boon and said that if anyone would keep a fast on Ekadashi, he/she would get Moksha (salvation).
On this day, people keep Ekadashi fast and do not eat any cereal or grain, as it is believed that they become infected by sin on this day.
