30 SEP 2016 SARVAPITRU AMAVASYA

Significance and Importance of Sarvpitru Moksha Amavasya

By Nandita Pandey
As per the Hindu Lunar calendar, the first fortnight of the month of Ashwani is designated for Karmic cleansing and for performing rituals and prayers for the ancestors. Popularly known as “Pitra Paksh” or Mahalaya Paksh; it is a 15 day period assigned to pray for peace, happiness and salvation of all the ancestors.
“Sanatan Dharma” – the Hindu way of life boasts of various rituals and rites from pre birth to post birth of the Jeevaatma. In the cycles of reincarnation, the Soul’s journey continues from birth to death to re-birth again; till the karmic cycle is completely negated and final culmination with God i.e. the oneness with Supreme Divine Energy is achieved. This phase is known as the Moksha state of being - the ultimate salvation.

In this entire process, a “Jeevaatma” undergoes a state of “Preta-Aatma” to a state of being “Pitra” when the Soul resides in the Pitra Loka, the abode for ancestors and thereafter the process of re-birth to cleanse and mend accumulated Karmic bondages. As explained earlier, this whole process continues till all the karmic bondages are cleansed and the Soul attains Moksha.

Our ancestors leave behind their good and bad karmas. We enjoy happiness, success, peace and prosperity because of their good karmas and face obstacles, hindrances and illness in life due to some of their bad karmas that keeps reflecting in our life.  When we perform rituals for their peace, they bless us in return as we have helped them in releasing their negative karmic ties.

In sacred texts like Garud Purana or Agni Purana, a detailed version of soul’s journey is explained along with the remedial measures that the descendants can perform. By performing certain rituals and rites, they can cleanse the negative karmas of the Soul so that its further journey is less burdened and more peaceful. These remedies, when performed by the offspring, can also help the soul in attaining salvation.

Out of all these fifteen day period, Sarv-Pitru amavasya holds utmost importance. However, some even take into consideration the full moon night of Bhadrapada month as Pitra Purnima. However, in most north Indian parts pitra paksh starts from the pratipada or the first day of the Ashwin month which would generally fall in the months of September/ October of Gregorian Calendar.

“Sarv Pitra Amavasya” also popularly known as “Mahalaya Amavasya” is the most important day during this period of Pitra Paksh. This is called as Mahalaya Amavasya , as “Maha” means great and “laya” means destruction. According to the legend, it is said that during the churning of the “Divine nectar” a lot of Rishis and Devas were killed by the demons on the Amavasya of Ashwin month. Since these Rishis (Saints) or Devas (Heavenly beings) are also considered to be our ancestors, the final day of this Pitra-paksh has also been specifically dedicated to them.

It is also believed that the Souls of our ancestors are closest to Mother Earth during these days. According to a boon by Lord Yama to Kunti Putra Karna, anyone who prays for the peace of one’s ancestors, perform shraddh and tarpan in their name,  donate food, do charity in their name, their ancestors shall be expiated of their karmas and shall eventually attain peace and salvation due to these acts of goodness done by their progeny.

Normally, the shraddh or other rituals are performed in the name of a particular ancestor on the Tithi when he or she left the physical body. But at times one is not aware of the lunar dates on which the ancestors left their mortal body, in such cases “Sarv Pitra Amavasya” comes as a rescue. As the name suggests, Sarv means all, pitra means ancestors and Amavasya is the dark night - which means a day which is designated for all ancestors irrespective of the tithis they have died on.

As mentioned earlier, It is also known as Mahalaya Amavasya , and is assigned as a day when prayers and rites can be performed for all the ancestors – male, female, children, childless ancestors or ancestors who have died sudden unnatural deaths.

Performing rites for one’s ancestors on this day also helps in expiating the pitra dosha or pitra rin that is otherwise reflected in one’s chart.

There are Pitra shakti spots and Pitra Mukti spaces all over the Jambudweepa (Indian subcontinent), where the energy grid is such that all the remedies and rites like Tarpan (Libation), Argyha, Shraddh etc are directly accepted by the Divine Lord.  There are more than 1008 Pitra Mukti sthans (Places) all over India. The most popular amongst them are Badrinath , Gaya , Prayag, Kashi , Rameshwaram, Poovalur etc.

Tarpan is the easiest of all the practices and should be performed throughout the period of Pitru Paksha. If one is not able to perform Tarpan daily, than one should at least do the same on the day of “Sarv Pitru Amavasya”.

Tarpan (Libation of water) along with rice grains and black sesame seeds is the purest form of reverence to one’s ancestors. After taking bath one should face southwards and pour water in the name of one’s ancestors. One should also takeout food for cow, crow, dog and a Brahmin on this day. The energy of the Pitra (Ancestors) gets liberated by these rites. Any other act of kindness in their name also helps in contributing towards their peaceful journey ahead.

The dark fortnight of Amavasya in the month of Ashwin is considered to be the most auspicious and the most powerful one for performing obsequies and tarpan.

“Sarvpitra Moksha Amavasya” in 2014 falls on the 23rd of September. The best time to perform the rites on Sarvpitra Moksha Amavasya is from 11:49 am – 3:49 pm which covers the time of Kutup Muhurat, Rohina Muhurat and Aparahana Muhurat.

Apart from performing sacred rites, you can meditate and send healing energies to your ancestors. Once released of their negative karmas, they bless you back with love, peace, happiness, good health, wealth, name, fame and success. These are beautiful days to remember your ancestors fondly and to be grateful to them for your well being.

Stay blessed..!!
