Skanda Shashti-Prayers to the Powerful Lord Subramanya, Karthikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati

skandarKanda Sashti is observed in the Tamil Month Aippasi. Skanda Sashti 2015 dates are from November 12 begins with six-day fasting and ends on November 17, 2015 with Soorasamharam. Tirukalyanam is on November 18. Skanda Shasti celebrates the victory of Lord Skanda over demon Surapadmam.
Sashti is the day the Lord Subramanya defeated the demon Soorapadma and saved the Earth from his evils. When the devas couldn’t tolerate the evil doings of this demon, they approached the younger son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The Kind Lord went on a war against Soorapadman. The war was waged for six days, at the end of which the Lord vanquished the asura. He threw his weapon at him and Soorapadman was split into two halves. One half became a peacock, which He took as His vaahana. The other became a cock and was transformed into his flag.

Tarakasura was oppressing the Deva Loka and it is out of this one single minded mission that lord Kartikeya was begetted by Lord Shiva and His consort Devi Parvati.
Lord Subramanya is a ray born of the Divine Consciousness of Lord Siva. Valli and Deivayanai are His two wives. They represent the power of action and the power of knowledge respectively. He is a Godhead easily accessible in this dark age of ignorance and lack of faith. In this He is no different from Hanuman. He gives material and spiritual prosperity and success in every undertaking of His devotees, even if they show a little devotion to Him. He is worshipped with great devotion in South India. Lord Subramanya’s other names are Kumaresa, Kartikeya, Shanmukha, Guha, Muruga and Velayudhan.
Subramanya with his consorts Valli and Devayani
In His picture, Lord Subramanya holds a spear in His hand, just as Lord Siva holds the trident. This is an emblem of power. It indicates that He is the ruler of the universe. His vehicle is the peacock. He rides on it. This signifies that He has conquered pride, egoism and vanity. There is a cobra under His feet, which indicates that He is absolutely fearless, immortal and wise. Valli is on His one side, Deivayanai on the other. Sometimes He stands alone with His spear. In this pose He is known as Velayudhan; this is His Nirguna aspect, which is free from the illusory power of Maya.
The six heads of Kartikeya also represent six attributes of the Deity. They are: Jnana (wisdom), Vairagya (detachment), Bala (strength), Kirtti (fame), Shree (wealth) and Aiswarya (Divine power). They also indicate His control over the five organs of knowledge as well as the mind. They denote that He is the Supreme Being with thousands of heads and hands. His head turned in all directions signifies that He is all-pervading. It indicates that He can multiply and assume forms at will.
Skanda Shashti or Kanda Shasthi Vratam is an important observance dedicated to Lord Muruga. It is observed in the Tamil month of Aippasi and most devotees fast during the 6-day period.
How to observe Skanda Shashti Vratam or Fasting?
Skanda Shashti or Kanda Shasthi Vratam is an important observance dedicated to Lord Muruga. It is observed in the Tamil month of Aippasi and most devotees fast during the 6-day period.
There is no common method of Skanda Shasti fasting. Different devotees observe it differently. But there are some basic rules followed by all the devotees.
  • Non-vegetarian food is completely avoided during the period.
  • Some people also avoid garlic and onions.
  • Those who are observing the fast make it a point to read scriptures related to Lord Muruga or recite the Skandha Shashti Kavasam or Subramanya Bhujangam (download here).
  • Most devotees also visit Skanda temples during the period.
  • When it comes to Kanda Shashti fasting, some devotees only take a single meal a day.
  • Some take the meal at noon and others at night.
  • Some devotees confine to fruits and juices during the 6-day period.
There are several Skanda devotees who see the Vratam as an opportunity to clean the body and get rid of unwanted toxic elements. Such devotees confine to water, coconut water and other fruit juices. The fasting ends on the Sixth day.
On each of the six days, all the participants do Japa of the Mantra, Om Saravanabhavaya Namahas much as possible. They even greet one another with this Mantra.
During Kanda Shashti, devotees observe six days fasting which starts from first day or Pirathamai of Karthika lunar month and ends on the sixth day which is known as Soorasamharam day. Soorasamharam is the final and the most important day of the six days festivities. It is believed that Lord Murugan defeated Demon Surapadman on the very same day and the festival of Soorasamharam is observed every year to mark the victory of good over evil.
It is important to note that the day when Shashti Tithi conjugates with Panjami Tithi is chosen for Soorasamharam Vratam. Hence most temples observe Kanda Sashti on Panjami Tithi if Shasti Tithi starts before sunset on Panjami Tithi.
Kanda Shashti celebrations at Thiruchendur Murugan Temple are the most famous one. The six days celebrations which start from Pirathamai of Karthika Masam culminate on Soorasamharam day. Thiru Kalyanam is observed on the next day of Soorasamharam.
