Vaman Jayanti | Vaman Jayanti 2016 | Vaman Jayanti Festival | Vaman Dwadashi | Vaman Dwadashi 2016

Vaman Jayanti is celebrated every year on Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month. It is also known as Vaman Dwadashi. In 2016, Vaman Jayanti will be celebrated on September, As per the legends, Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, Lord Vamana was born in the Shravan Nakshatra on this day.
On this day devotees worship Shri Hari early in the morning with proper rituals. Donating  rice, curd etc is considered to be auspicious on this day. In the evening, the devotees should listen to Vamana Katha along with the family members and distribute prasad among everyone. Devotees should observe fast and perform puja with proper rituals to please Lord Vamana and to get all wishes fulfilled.

Vaman Jayanti Katha

Lord Vamana is one of the significant form of Lord Vishnu. It is the fifth avatar or incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu Purana and Shrimudagvad Purana have described this incarnation of Lord Vishnu in great detail. It describes the glory of  Lord Vamana.
As per the legends, Asuras or Daityas lost the battle against Devas. Bali, the king of Asuras became unconscious from the attack of Indra Dev and was on the death bed. At that point of time Shukracharya gave his life saving herb (Sanjeevani) to all the Asuras who were unconscious and attacked and helped them to regain their life and strength.  After that, King Bali performed an austerity and became powerful than Devas. He achieved divine chariot, trident and armor for his protection through his austerities and went back to battle with Devas in the heaven.
Indra Deva got to know about the intentions of King Bali and that he will be able to conquer heaven in this battle once he completes his 100 yagnas,  Indra Deva went to Lord Vishnu and asked for his help. Inorder to protect Devas from the wrath of Asuras, Lord Vishnu incarnates into Lord Vamana and takes birth from the womb of Aditi, wife of Saint Kashyap. Thereafter, Saint Kashyap asked his wife Aditi to observe Payo Fast  to get blessed by a son. Consequently, on the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month Aditi gave birth to a son who was named Vamana. He adopts the form of Brahmachari.
Vamana was offered different things by each saint and goddesses, such as from Saint Pulaha, deerskin from Agastya, butea rod from Marichi, clothes from Angiras, umbrella from Sun, from Bhrigu, Sacred thread and Kamandal from Guru Deva, loincloth from Aditi, Rudraksha from Saraswati and begging tray from Kuber. Soon after he grew up, Vamana went to see King Bali on the day of his 100th Ashwamedh Yagna. King Bali asked Brahmin Vamana to ask for anything he desires. Vamana asked for three paces of land that he could  measure from his own feet. Since he had made a promise, he could not deny it and had to fulfill the Brahmins wish. Vamana took the first step, encompassing the whole earth, and the second covered the heavens. In this way he conquered two of the three worlds. There was no place to keep the third step on which Bali offered his head to Vamana. Vamana accepted it and placed his last step on Bali’s head.
Lord Vishnu was pleased by the integrity of Bali of fulfilling his promise. He blessed Bali with one desire. Bali asked Lord Vishnu to be present in front of him day and night so that he is able to worship him. To keep his promise and to fulfill Bali’s desire Lord Vishnu had to  become his gatekeeper.

Vaman Jayanti Significance

According to the HinduScriptures, the significance of Vamana Jayanti increases if it lies on Shravan Nakshatra. Devotees should make idol of Lord Vamana and worship him with proper rituals. A person who worships him with full devotion gets freedom from all sufferings and attains salvation.

Vaman Jayanti

Lord Vaman is one of the 10 Avatars of Lord Vishnu. Hindus mark the birthdays of the four main avatars – Sri Ram, Sri Krishna, Sri Narasimha and Sri Vaman-ji with more flair and festivity than the other 6 avatars because of the time they spent with their devotees while on Earth.
Each of the four main avatars came to destroy demon kings who gained immense powers.
These avatars are:
Lord Ram avatar – he came to destroy the evil of Rawan
Lord Krishna avatar – he came to destroy Kansa
Lord Narasimha avatar – he came to destroy Hiranyakshipu
Lord Vaman avatar – he came to stop Raja Bali
God Vishnu incarnates on Earth from time to time to eradicate evil forces, to restore the dharma and to liberate the worthy ones or devotees from the cycle of births and deaths.
Lord Vamana is the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the first avatar of Treta Yuga. Vamana is the first ever avatar of Lord Vishnu who appears in a complete human form. He is in the form of dwarf Brahmin.
He is the first avatar to appear with anthropomorphize features, although he does appear as a dwarfNamboothiri Brahmin. He is also known as Upendra and Trivikrama.
Vamana was born to Aditi and Kashyapa. He is the twelfth of the AdityasVamana is also the younger brother of IndraVamana appeared on earth to give moksha to Asura King Bali and also help Devas (Demi gods) who had lost their power to King Bali
Vamana was the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu during Treta Yuga. Special Puja is organized in Lord Vishnu temples on the occasion of Vamana Jayanti.

When is it observed?

Vamana is one of the 10 incarnations of lord Vishnu. Vamana Jayanti is the birth day of Lord Vamana. It is celebrated on the Bhadrapada Sukla Dwadashi or the 12th day of the waxing phase of moon in the month of Bhadrapada, the day after Parivartini Ekadashi.
Vaman Jayanthi 2014 date is September 6. Lord Vamana is the fifth of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. He is a brahmin dwarf, born to restrict the demon King MahabaliVaman Jayanthi is celebrated on his birthday.

Significance

The day shows that we should not be proud of our achievements. The day therefore teaches us humility and modesty. By observing this day we can burn the effects of past sins and make a new beginning. There are many temples which are dedicated to the Lord VamanaVamana Ekadashi is celebrated a day prior to Vamana Dwadashi. Vamana Ekadashi is celebrated by observing a fast dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The day is considered very auspicious and carries a great spiritual and religious significance. Vamana Ekadashi fast is completed on Vamana Dwadashi.
It is believed that by chanting and worshipping Lord Vishnu on Vaman Dwadashi a person can get relieved from all the mistakes and sins which he has committed knowingly or otherwise. The importance of the day also lies in the fact that the Vamana Ekadashi fast will not be completed until the Dwadashi.
The interesting part of the Vamana Avatar is that Lord Vishnu does not kill any demons. Vamana Avatar was meant only to see that a power of the demons does not increase as having one righteous demon would not change the whole set of demons.
King Bali was a pious and rightful king who ruled his kingdom with Dharma. King Bali was a demon, but his nature was quite opposite to that of the demons and was always keen in doing well to everyone. Under his rule all people were happy. King Bali was powerful and defeated all the Devas. He started to perform Aswamedha Yagnas. The fruit of doing 100 Aswamedha Yagnas is the throne of Indra.
This Vedic story shows us that no one owns anything in this material world, even if we conquer planetary systems, there will come a time when we will be forced to abandon all wealth and position and surrender our pride at the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord.

Legend

The Vamana Avatar starts with Mahabali the Asura King. Mahabali was the great grandson of Hiranyakshipu, the grandson of Prahlada and the son ofVirochanaMahabali was a great devotee of Vishnu and also a great ruler and his people loved him. The people were very happy and prosperous under his rule. He was taught the Vedhas by his grandfather Prahlada and after that by his teacher Shukracharya. [After the churning of the ocean, when the Devas had taken the AmritIndra had killed Bali. Shukracharyabrought back Bali to life, with the help of his mantras and power.]
King Bali was a great philanthropist. He never sent anyone empty handed. He was very charitable towards brahmanas.
Mahabali performed severe penance to Lord Brahma. Finally Lord Brahma appeared him, ‘My Lord!’ Bali said bowing before Lord Brahma, ‘The people are always afraid of Asuras. I want to show the world that we are good. I want to have the power equal to Indra. I also should not be defeated in battle!’
Lord Brahma sensed that Mahabali was a righteous man, meant for great things. Without asking any questions, he granted Mahabali his boon.
Shukracharya was a very good teacher and a very good battle strategist. With his help, Bali soon conquered the three worlds. Bali defeated Indra, the King of the Gods and took over the heavens. However Bali aided by his Guru was always righteous and was devoted to Lord Vishnu.
Shukracharya once called him, ‘Bali! You have now conquered the three worlds. However if you wish to always be the Lord of the three worlds, you have to perform 100 Ashwamedha Yagnas. It is befitting that a king like you should perform the Ashwamedha Yagna, and then you will always be the king of the 3 worlds.’
Bali who respected his teacher nodded his head and started about making preparations for the Yagna. Preparations were going on full scale.
Indra was worried that he would lose his throne for ever and went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu told Indra that, Bali was a devotee and a noble king. Bali had not done any sin so he cannot kill him.Indra and other prayed that Bali only being righteous does not make the whole demon clan righteous and the power of demons must be curbed to maintain sanctity in the worlds.
Lord Vishnu agreed to Indra and other Gods. He said he would find out a way to curb King Bali. Lord Vishnu once promised Aditi –mother of Indra God that he would be born as her son. In order to protect Devas from the wrath of Asuras, Lord Vishnu incarnates into Lord Vamana and takes birth from the womb of Aditi, wife of Saint Kashyap. Thereafter, Saint Kashyap asked his wife Aditi to observe a twelve-day vrat known as Payovrat (Payo Fast) to get blessed by a son. Consequently, on the Shukla Paksha ofBhadrapad month Aditi gave birth to a son who was named Vamana. He adopts the form of dwarfBrahmachari.
So Lord Vishnu is born to Aditi and Sage Kashyapa. The child grew immediately to the age of seven.
He had an aura of light and was magnificent to look at. He was small in height and hence namedVamana which means dwarf in Sanskrit. Sage Kashyapa performed the sacred thread ceremony calledodugu. All the gods gave different kinds of articles like Sage Brihaspathi presented him the sacred thread, Sun preached him the Gayatri Mantra & gave him a umbrella, Kubera gave a Golden water pot called Kamandalambutea rod from MarichiRudraksha from Saraswati etc. Mother Aditi gives LordVamana a Red Kaupinam which is a piece of cloth also called as Langoti. One can see that in Gurvayur, Lord Guruvaryoorappan will be seen with red Langoti or Kaupinam during Nirmalya Seva.
Meanwhile Mahabali had performed 99 Ashwamedha Yagna and had to perform just one more yagnaafter which he could be crowned as the King of the Gods.
The final Ashwamedha Yagna was about to be get completed at Bhrugukutch when the entire kingdom saw a handsome dark boy approach the throne. He looked radiant and looked as if he had mastered all the arts in the universe. Lord Vamana reaches the place where King Bali was performing the Aswamedhayagna. Everyone in that place watch this boy with surprise, because of the aura around him in such a small age. Even King Bali notices this boy. The Guru of Demons, Sukracharya immediately recognizes that this boy is none other than Lord Vishnu and advises Bali not to give that Brahmin boy anything in donation.
King Bali respectfully tells Sukracharya that even if the boy is Lord Vishnu who has come to kill him, he is ready to give his life. He also adds that it is a pride and honor for him, that Lord Vishnu thinks that he is capable of giving the almighty something. He asks the boy to come forward and asks him to wish whatever he wants.
The boy smiles and says that he would want three steps of land, measured by his foot. King Bali readily agrees and takes a Kamandalam to give the Dana by pouring water into the hands of Lord VamanaSukracharya as a last resort tries to stop it by blocking the flow of water from thekamanadlam as a bee. Lord Vamana uses a Dharba, holy grass to clear the way of the water flowing from the kamandalam. The dharba punctures the eye of the Sukracharya and he had to move away from the way and let the water flow. From that day onwards Sukracharya has only one eye.
After receiving the three steps in Dana, Vamana grows in gigantic size to the extent that he covers whole earth in one step and all the other worlds (Heaven) in the second step. He asks Bali where he should place his third step. Bali respectfully shows his head and Lord Vamana taking away all the worlds that Bali has conquered pushes him to nether land or Patala Loka.
Lord Vishnu was pleased by the integrity of Bali of fulfilling his promise. Bali Maharaja surrendered all his material possessions at the lotus feet of the Lord and achieved the transcendental favor of Lord Vishnu, who became the door keeper of Bali’s residence in the Sutala Planet. To keep his promise and to fulfil Bali’s desire Lord Vishnu had to become his gatekeeper and gave him a boon to become Indra in the next Manvantara and also a boon to visit his kingdom once in a year which is celebrated as Onam in Kerala.
Mahabali symbolizes ahankar, the three feet symbolizes the three planes of existence (JagratSwapna and Sushupthi) and final step is on his head which elevates from all three states and he attains moksha. Hence in Vamana Avatara the lord teaches us that he would shower his blessings on a demon also and test for integrity and righteous nature of the person.
The Onam festival is a celebration of welcoming Mahabali home to his lost kingdom. During this festival, beautiful floral decorations are made in every house and boat races are held throughout Kerala. A twenty-one-course feast is the most important part of the Onam festival.
It is reported that Vamanji’s ashram is situated in a town named Baksaar in the Shahaabad district of Bihar. On this same site, the rishi Vishwamitrafounded his own ashram. The Vaman Puran cites 131sacred places of Lord Vamanji.
The place where this incident of sending Bali to Patala Loka occurred is believed to be Thrikkakkara. Originally it was Thirukalkari, which means the place where the holy feet was placed and becameThrikkakkara.
There is a temple of Lord Vamana in this place which is 2 kms for Idapally near Kochi.

Vaman Jayanti is celebrated every year on Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad month. It is also known as Vaman Dwadashi. As per the legends, Lord Vishnu's incarnation, Lord Vamana was born in the Shravan Nakshatra on this day.

Origin :
The shastras cite that Prahlad's grandson, King Bali performed a grand Ashwamegh Yagna at Bhrugukutch (Bharuch) on the banks of the river Narmada. Of the 100 yagnas to be completed, he was performing the final. And one who performed 100 yagnas became Lord Indra. The threat of being toppled frightened the reigning Indra, who divulged his predicament to Aditi, his mother. He also informed her of the three insuperable weapons, already procured by Bali from a previous yagna: a divine chariot, a wishing plate and an indestructible armour. With these he could reign terror and attain victory. In turn, Aditi informed her consort, Kashyap, of their son's imminent doom.
Kashyap advised her, "Accept the Lord's refuge and offer sincere devotion. Devotion offered by the meek bears fruit more easily than by anybody else."
Aditi therefore performed a twelve-day vrat known as Payovrat. This pleased the Lord, who granted her a boon to resolve her problem.
As a result Lord Vishnu was born to her as Vamanji - a dwarf In the garb of a brahmachari, he approached King Bali at Bhrugukutch.
The Shatapatha Brahmana cites a slightly different version. When the devas battled with the demons, the latter won. They then began to divide the Earth among themselves. Lord Vishnu arrived as Vaman and demanded some land for the devas. The demons agreed to grant only three strides of land. At that instant Vaman turned into a gigantic form and swiped all the three worlds.
King Bali welcomed the brahmachari. He requested him to ask for whatever alms he wished.
Vamanji replied, "O King of demons! I only wish for a three strides of land."
Astonished, Bali said, "O Batuk, you are just a little boy and do not understand things. What can you do with three strides of land? At least ask for enough land to will sustain you."
The Lord chuckled. "O king! He is happy who accepts that which is granted by the Lord. Such contentment is the root of moksha. Conversely, one who has not subdued his senses will not be content with even the three worlds."
This pleased Bali, who pledged to grant some land. When Shukracharya, the guru of the demons heard of his pledge, he arrived hotfoot. He warned the king, "O Bali! He is none other than Lord Vishnu. He'll take everything." But King Bali remained undaunted, keeping his word. Shukracharya cursed him. Bali accepted the curse.
At that instant, the little Lord transformed into a colossus. In one stride he covered the whole of earth. With his second he covered the sky and heavens, including Maharlok, Janlok, Taplok and Satyalok! "Where should I now place the third stride?" he asked Bali. With humility, Bali replied, "O Lord, set your foot (third stride) on my head." Vamanji then placed his foot on Bali's head and drove him down into Patal. Pleased with the demon king's selfless devotion, the Lord granted him a boon to remain at his doorstep. King Bali's wife, Vindhyavali, wholeheartedly supported his gift to Vamanji.
It is reported that Vamanji's ashram is situated in a town named Baksaar in the Shahaabad district of Bihar. On this same site, the rishi Vishwamitra founded his own ashram. The Vaman Puran cites 131sacred places of Lord Vamanji.

Ritual :
Devotees observe a "faraari" fast for half a day, taking normal food from the afternoon
