Mahalaya 2016 date and time - Mahalaya in 2016

Mahalaya is observed on the Amavasi day in the Hindu month of Ashwin or Ashwayuja (September-October). Mahalaya 2016 date is September 30, Friday. Time is 2:53 AM on September 30 to 3:56 AM on October 1. The last day of Pitru Paksha fortnight, the period sacred for doing rituals and offering oblations to the souls of the departed ancestors, ends on Mahalaya day. Durga Puja rituals also commence on Mahalaya day.

The rituals and rites on Mahalaya day are performed early morning on riverbanks or on seashore. The main offering made on Mahalaya Paksha to ancestors is food. It is believed that the offering made during this period will benefit all the departed souls. Charity in the form of food is also done by people.

Mahalaya – Durga Puja

Mahalaya also heralds the advent of Goddess Durga to earth. Mahalaya marks the beginning of ‘Devipaksha’ and the countdown to Durga Puja.

On Mahalaya day, invitation is given to Goddess Durga to descend on to the earth along with her family. In Bengal, Goddess Saraswathi and Goddess Lakshmi are considered part of the family of Durga.

Ashwin Navratri

Navratri is celebrated five times a year. They are Magh Navaratri, Vasant Navratri, Ashad Navratri, Ashwin Navaratri and Shakambari Navratri. Of these, the Ashwin Navaratri and the Vasant Navaratri of the chaitra are very important. The other two navratra's are known as gupt navratra meant for sadhaks. It is said in Agni Purana that the Chaitra and Ashwin are like the two jaws of Lord Yama. By worshipping on these two navratras one is protected from the disfavour of yama. Ashwin navratri also known as sharad or durga navratri has the potency to protect the individual from negative forces and propitiate Shakti to bestow upon us wealth, prosperity, knowledge both sacred and secular, and other required positive energies.

Durga Navratri - Ashwin Navratri 2016 Dates

Ashwin navratri, also known as Sharad Navratri or Durga Navratri, is a nine day festival dedicated to Goddess Kali of dus mahavidya. In the year 2016, Durga Puja, Ashwin or Sharad navratri will be from 2nd oct 2016 to 11th oct 2016. Vamtantra conducts ashwin navratri puja from pratipada to dasami shukla paksha in ashwin masa(october 2016). Durga Navratri Puja

Navratri puja is a sanctified festival of Goddess Durga. Navratri is a blissful solemnisation involving nine nights of worship. The Nine Nights of Goddess Durga has a great significance in terms of spiritual and material gain. To rejuvenate ourselfs, both physically and mentally vamtantra tune with the creative energies that come to the fore during these nine navratri nights. During these Durga Puja or Ashwin or Sharad navratri auspicious days, extensive prayer is offered to request earnestly Goddess Durga and Kali for blessings.
